The Faux-Real Theatre Company is currently developping two brand new projects!

The first script, entitled
I.E.- "In Other Words" is an original full-length play written by FRTC Artistic Director Mark Greenfield. I.E. uses the time-honored Horatio Alger inspired tale of a poor country boy making it big in the Big City. As the protagonists hyper-linear "success story" unfolds, the highly stylized dialogue and the absurd stage actions that occur, actively assault the dramatic structure of the play as well as its traditional narrative. In I.E., dramatic devices such as foreshadowing, allusion, objective, metaphor and symbolism are overtly revealed. Through this dramaturgical construct, characters expose their intentions as well as the intentions of the writer. In I.E., subtext becomes surface, and the linguistic tools through which emotional responses are affected become the underlying theme. For example; rather than the writer selecting a characterıs clever colloquialism, the character will instead state the line "Insert a clever colloquialism here" to which another character replies "a casual response that feigns interest." It is important to note that this structure does not supersede the emotional resonance or override the narrative as a whole, but is used, along with other devices, to reveal character and plot through expressive, experimental forms. With its non-naturalistic use of language and highly specific and detailed stage directions I.E. is ideal material for FRTC ensemble members to employ the verbal, physical and script analysis techniques we have developed over the company's history. It is intended for the more seasoned theatre-going members of our audience and community, and is viewed as an outreach piece for new audiences. I.E. is scheduled to be workshopped during our fall residency at chashama.

FRTC President Contance Tarbox is working on a new musical adaptation of Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus" called
TITUS! (exclamation point). She hopes to develop the score in time for a winter workshop, leading to a full-scale production for Summer 05. TITUS! represents FRTC's first foray into musical theatre. It provides FRTC artists the opportunity to explore the possibility of depicting a classic text through song and dance. TITUS! challenges our company to expand upon our past deconstructions and re-interpretations of Shakespeare. The musical theatre genre requires us to broaden our artistic base and bring in a composer, musicians, dancers, and singers to train and collaborate with our current ensemble.
