| The Story of THE TINDERBOX Fantastically Adapted by Carrie Dubois from Hans Christian Andersen's Wonderful Tale Set in a gypsy circus world, and narrated by a mysterious Ring Master, THE TINDERBOX follows the story of Philip, a common soldier and his not so common adventures. On his way home from war, Philip meets a fire-breathing Witch who convinces him to climb down inside a hollow tree and fetch her granny's TINDERBOX (a small metal box, used to keep fire making materials safe and dry). At the bottom of the tree he meets Three Very Unusual Dogs, "the first with eyes as big as tea cups, the second with eyes as big as bicycle wheels and the third with eyes as big as ferris wheels." The Magic Dogs teach him that things are not always what they seem, that even strange and ferocious looking beasts can be kind, and soldiers don't always have to be poor. They give him gold and silver and send him back up the tree with THE TINDERBOX. The Witch demands THE TINDERBOX, but suspecting there is something special and perhaps magical about the box, the Soldier decides to keep it for himself. Philip takes his money and THE TINDERBOX to the big city where he is now treated as a nobleman and his newfound wealth attracts some sneaky gold digging friends. It also brings him into the company of the Princess Adele and he immediately falls in love with her. Poor Princess Adele has been locked in a tower, away from the world, her whole life. Her parents, the King and his overbearing Queen, were once told by a Witch that Adele would someday marry a common soldier, and naturally they couldn't allow that to happen. But when they host a ball, in attempt to find a more suitable husband for their daughter, Adele of course falls in love with Philip, a soldier in disguise. The young couple is soon parted, though, when the Queen decides that Princess Adele should marry the wealthy and ridiculous Prince Randolph, the Third of ...er... somewhere. After the ball, Philip becomes obsessed with trying to see the Princess once again, and in his attempts to do so, squanders away all the money the Magic Dogs had given him. Soon he is poor once again, and his "friends" abandon him and he is left alone. But he remembers the witch's TINDERBOX and discovers that it has the power to summon the Three Magic Dogs, and once summoned, the Magic Dogs will bring him what ever he wishes. Well, he of course wishes for money, and soon he is rich once again. But he also wishes to see the Princess. The Magic Dogs bring her to Philip, asleep on their backs, in the middle of the night. Adele is convinced that the Soldier and his Magic Dogs are only a dream. But the Queen is not so sure. With the help of her Lady in Waiting, she discovers the reality of her daughter's late night rendezvous, and is determined to put an end to it, and to the Soldier. Philip is arrested and sentenced to death. He awaits his execution, alone and with no TINDERBOX to summon his Magic Dogs to help him. |
